The Cesky terrier is a small dog with a silky and smooth coat. It was originally developed in Czechoslovakia where it was used for hunting. Its appearance mostly resembles a Scottish terrier. The Cesky terrier is playful and enjoys being active with its owner.

Character and behaviour
The Cesky terrier is a friendly and happy dog. It is calm and not as noisy and active as other terriers. It is easily trained given that it is very intelligent. However, it is essential that the dog knows who is the leader of the pack; otherwise it can become stubborn and hot-tempered.

The Cesky terrier loves being with people, especially children. Therefore it is a perfect family dog. At the same time, it is an alert guard dog that calls attention to uninvited guests. Likewise, it can be reserved towards strangers thus making it important to socialise the dog while it is still a puppy. A Cesky terrier is usually well spirited and never behaves aggressively.

History of the breed
The Cesky terrier is a relatively new breed of terrier originating from Czechoslovakia. It was a breeder and geneticist, Frantisek Horak, who developed the Cesky after the Second World War. He wanted a small hunting dog with a smooth coat. In that way, the dog could easier get under grown. Thus, he crossed a Scottish terrier with a Sealyham terrier.

That resulted in the Cesky terrier. However, it is uncertain whether or not other breeds were involved. Some people think that the Dandie Dinmont terrier took part in the development. The Cesky terrier is a very uncommon breed today.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Cesky terrier is characterised by its robust, medium long body, and wedge shaped head. The medium-long ears are hanging down. The tail is set low and hanging down. The legs are very short. The colour of the nose varies depending on the colour of the coat. The eyes are medium-sized and vary in colour from light to dark brown.

The Cesky terrier is 10-13 inches tall and weighs 13-23 pounds.

The coat is smooth and delicate with a silky appearance. The coat colour can either be greyish blue or light brown. The Cesky terrier has a specific haircut: long hair on the legs, under the belly, and in the face. On the back the hair is cut short. It does not shed a lot, in return it needs brushings more times a week and cutting 3-4 times a year.

The Cesky terrier is generally speaking a healthy breed. It can easily live in an apartment as long as it gets long walks daily. Life expectancy is 12-15 years.
