The Chesapeake Bay retriever is an American breed, which is mainly used for hunting birds. It is an intelligent and friendly dog, which functions well as a family dog if only the dog’s needs are accommodated. The Chesapeake Bay retriever differs from other retrievers by being more independent and demanding. They love to swim, which is a fantastic means of exercise.

Character and behaviour
The Chesapeake Bay retriever is a versatile breed, which is both suitable for hunting, obedience training, and agility. Its stamina is outstanding and in order to achieve the best results in obedience training it is a good idea to incorporate play time sessions.

It is important that the owner demonstrates authority given that the Chesapeake thinks independently and might display dominating behaviour. A Chesapeake is an excellent guard dog and at the same time more dominating than other retrievers. It is thus important that it is socialised as a puppy and meets other dogs.

History of the breed
The Chesapeake Bay retriever is the only retriever originating from the USA. In 1870 a ship capsized off the coast of Maryland with two Newfoundland puppies on board. Everybody on board was rescued and the puppies were placed at an American family. Afterwards this family crossed the Newfoundlands with other retrievers and hunting dogs, thus creating the Chesapeake Bay retriever. It was used for hunting birds in the cold waters of Chesapeake Bay. The oily coat is water resistant and very suitable for hunting in water.

Appearance, grooming and health
The Chesapeake Bay retriever is a large and muscular breed, which build and expression clearly resembles the other retrievers. The biggest difference is the coat, which is dense, water resistant, and slightly curled along the back of the dog. The ears are small, v-shaped, and set high. It has web between the toes and a medium long tail.

The Chesapeake Bay retriever is 23-26 inches and weighs 65-80 pounds.

The coat is short and comes in a variety of brown colours. Most people prefer the single coloured version. Only wash the dog, when it is utmost necessary. It is important that the coat retain its oily quality. Otherwise, a brush through in order to remove dead hair should do. It is an average shedder.

Generally speaking it is a healthy breed, however, it may be prone to suffer from eye problems and hip dysplasia. Life expectancy is 10-12 years.
