The Papillon may be small but it is also hardy and can easily go for long walks. The Papillon is very similar to the Phalene dog breed (has hanging ears). It is widely believed that the Papillon dog originates in Spain.

Character and behavior
The Papillon is a social little dog that loves spending time with its family. The Papillon is also an energetic dog that likes outdoor activities. Despite the dogs small size the Papillon can do a good job in an Agility ring.

The Papillon loves to play and romp around. With early socialization with other pets, strangers and cats the Papillon can easily get along with your other pets and strangers.

The Papillon can live in an apartment and doesn’t need a big yard. You should be aware that the Papillon has a tendency to bark at small sounds even when it’s not necessary to alert the owner. This might annoy other tenants in an apartment building.

History of the breed
The Papillon is an old breed that is believed to have originated in Spain. The Papillon has been bred from the Phalene breed with hanging ears. The Papillon can be found in Italian paintings dating all the way back to the thirteenth century. The Papillon achieved great popularity among Spanish and French noble women. The dog breed is also known as Continental Toy Spaniel.

Appearance, grooming and health
The most characteristic trait of the Papillon dog breed is the erect and butterfly-like ears. It’s also because of the ears that the dog got its name Papillon that means “butterfly” in French. The eyes are large, dark and almond-shaped. The tail is long and is worn curled over the back. The muzzle is short and black.

The Papillon weighs 7 to 10 lbs and reaches a height between 8 to 11 inches. The coat is blank, silky and slightly curly. The coat is longer on the hind legs, ears, tail and chest. The coat needs regular grooming and the Papillon will shed twice a year. The Papillon can reach a life span up to 16 years and is generally a healthy dog breed.
